How to Customise Canva Templates for Your Brand

There are tons of Canva social media templates inside our membership that members can use on platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter. These templates make it easy to create professional, cohesive content without needing a graphic design background. The best part? You can fully customise them to match your unique brand aesthetic, voice, and message.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to customise your Canva templates, turning them into powerful assets that reflect your brand.

How to customise in Canva

Step 1: Set Up Your Canva Account

To get started, you’ll need a free Canva account. If you don’t have one yet, you can sign up here for free. Canva offers both free and premium features, but our templates can be customised with the free account.

Step 2: Explore Canva’s Tutorials

If you’re new to Canva, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with the platform before jumping into customisation. Here are some helpful tutorials to guide you:

  • Navigating the Canva Editor: Learn the basic layout and tools of Canva to help you design with ease.

  • Adding & Editing Text: Master the art of adding and styling text to make your designs stand out.

  • Uploading Images: Find out how to upload your own images or logos to further personalise your templates.

  • How to Share, Download, or Publish Your Design: Once your design is complete, learn how to export or share it with your audience.

Step 3: Customising Templates for Your Brand

Now, let’s dive into the customisation process.

1. Upload Your Brand Assets

Before you start customising your Canva templates, gather all the essential elements that represent your brand, including your logo, brand colours, and any fonts you typically use.

  • Upload your logo: Simply click on the ‘Uploads’ tab on the Canva editor and upload your logo. You can then drag it into any template.

  • Create a Brand Kit: If you have a Canva Pro account, use the Brand Kit feature to store your colours, fonts, and logos for easy access.

2. Customise Colours

Colours play a significant role in brand identity. Even if you love a template's design, you’ll want to make sure it aligns with your brand's colours. To do this:

  • Select any element in the template (text, shapes, icons) and click on the colour tile in the toolbar.

  • Choose from Canva’s colour options or paste your brand’s hex colour codes for precise matches.

This ensures that every piece of content remains visually consistent with your brand.

3. Edit the Text to Match Your Voice

While the design is important, what you say and how you say it matters just as much. Customise the text in each template to reflect your brand’s messaging.

  • Update the font: If your brand uses a specific font, change the text in the template to match. Canva has a wide range of fonts to choose from, and you can also upload your own.

  • Reword the text: Edit the placeholders with your own words, making sure the tone aligns with your brand’s voice. For example, if your brand is playful and casual, ensure the text reflects that style.

4. Add Your Own Images

Personalising a template with your own images is a great way to make it truly yours. Whether it’s product photos, lifestyle shots, or behind-the-scenes glimpses of your business, authentic images will help your audience connect with your brand.

  • Use the ‘Uploads’ tab to add your images, and drag them into any design.

  • If you don’t have specific images, Canva also offers a vast library of free photos, but try to choose ones that match your brand aesthetic.

5. Tailor the Layout (If Necessary)

One of the most powerful features of Canva is its flexibility. You can move elements around to suit your content needs better. For example:

  • Reposition text boxes, images, or icons to highlight important information.

  • Resize elements or delete ones you don’t need to keep the design clean and clutter-free.

Step 4: Preview, Download, and Share

After customising your template, it’s time to review your design. Canva allows you to preview your work across different platforms (desktop, mobile, etc.), ensuring your content will look good everywhere.

Once you’re happy with your customisation:

  • Download: Export your design in the desired format (JPG, PNG, or PDF) to use on social media.

  • Share: Canva also lets you publish directly to social platforms, so you can share your content instantly.

Customising Canva templates for your brand is a simple, yet powerful way to maintain a cohesive and professional presence online. With the flexibility that Canva offers, you can adapt any template to reflect your brand identity, keeping your content consistent and engaging.
